The MCG will join a very exclusive club when the grand old stadium records its 100 millionth patron to have attended a VFL/AFL game at the venue.
AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said the AFL would formally mark the milestone at next Saturday’s Round 9 match between Richmond and Hawthorn at the spiritual home of the game.
While the AFL could not predict the exact match when the target would be reached, Mr Demetriou said a traditional Saturday afternoon game would be used as a celebration to thank all fans for their support of matches over the competition’s history.
After 15 matches, the MCG has attracted 821,949 people to AFL this season, at an average of 54,796 per match.
